favorites {june 2011}

That pie up there—it's a big favorite around my Brooklyn apartment right now. The filling is gooey, but not runny. Imagine a slice of fudge that sat out on a warm summer day. Soft enough to make an indentation with your finger—that's what this chocolate chess pie recalls to mind.

Mikey—the Mr., he says it reminds him of a pop tart, sans the chemical aftertaste. You know this means I'll soon be on a misson to figure out how to stuff the filling into a crisp pastry pocket (it's rather runny when poured into the pie shell). The recipe is part of big project I just handed in, and I promise to share it as soon as I can. The traditional chess pie recipe is waiting in the wings for you next week.

But I don't want to bore you with my weak knees over some pie. As we head into the weekend, I thought it would be nice to share some things I've been enjoying lately.

  • This post from Elizabeth at Guilty Kitchen—I almost thought she had tapped into my hard drive. Motherhood has it's rewards, no doubt, but at the end of the day, we all have to save a little piece for ourselves—and if you've never had fresh fava beans, then yes, they are totally worth the effort.
  • Jael McHenry was on the same panel I spoke on at Eat, Write, Retreat. I wish I'd read The Kitchen Daughter beforehand so I could tell her in person what a truly unique and captivating piece of fiction she wrote. You want to add this book to your summer reading list.
  • Screw Sausages! No really, and once you read this post from Kim, you'll understand why I shudder at the thought of the hog casings in my freezer. 
  • Back in highschool I kept my lip gloss tucked in my pocket, reapplying it frequently throughout the day. It's a habit still going strong, and Trish McEvoy's Instant Pick Me Up—a mood lipstick of sorts, adds a splash of pink that adjusts to your body chemistry. Makes me feel like I'm 15 all over again.
  • Since I started out gabbing about pie, it seems fitting to let you all know July 5th is officially Pie Day, as declared by my dear friend Shauna. So if you're a food blogger, post a pie recipe on that day—the best part of bringing a virtual pie is everyone gets a slice.
